Four Transition Year Students from Athlone Community College took part and sat in on various committees on the following topics.
DROI I
Fight for your life: With 8 out of 27 Member States still having compulsory military conscription, how can the EU support the Member States in protecting the rights of individuals facing conscription whilst upholding national security?
DROI II
Dark side of the rainbow: Given that 43% of LGBT+ people expressed that they felt discriminated against in a 2019 survey conducted by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, what can the EU and the Member States do to provide equal rights to people in the LGBT+ community?
ENVI
Survival is the exception: According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are currently 1677 European species that are in danger of extinction. With factors such as climate change, habitat loss and unsustainable agriculture causing a loss of biodiversity, what can the EU do to maintain its biodiversity?
FEMM
Who runs the world? Patriarchy: According to the European Gender Medicine Network, there is a significant gender data gap in medicine. From medical textbooks to clinical trials, women are continuously underrepresented and under-researched, prompting dismissal and misdiagnosis when seeking treatment. How can the EU make sure that the women in Member States receive effective medical care?
FISC
Let's get digital: With a rapid digitalisation of the economy, as well as an increase in digital businesses, how should the EU reconsider its policies regarding digital taxations to establish a fair business environment and avoid digital levies?
LIBE
Raise your voice: Given that only 42% of people under the age of 24 voted in the 2019 European Parliament elections, what can the EU do to make its young citizens more engaged in its political processes?
TRAN
Driving CO2: While the automobile industry plays an indispensable role for many with poor public transport access, 27% of greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to the production and usage of motor vehicles. Considering the increasing environmental concerns, what can the EU do to mitigate the effects of transport pollution?
